Coal burning releases large amount of air pollution. Every year the 900 million tons of coal burned in the US (83% coal used in electric power generation) and it releases 18 million metric ton oxides of nitrogen, 4 million metric ton of airborne particulates, 0.6 million m.t. of hydrocarbon's and CO and close to a trillion m.t. of carbon dioxide. Sulpher and nitrogen oxides combine with water in the air to form sulfuric and nitric acid. Making coal burning the largest single source of acid rain in many area.

Air pollutant related to coal have many deleterious effects including human health,cost,injury to domestic and wild plants and animals and damage to building and property.

By some account at least 5000 human death per year can be attributed to coal production and burning.
